The Balloon finally goes up

At long, long last it is finally confirmed that the election will be on Thursday 6th May.

At last the British people will have the chance to choose who will lead Britain for the next five years. And the choice at this election has never been more important. Voters can choose to vote for five more years of Gordon Brown’s tired government making things worse, or to vote for change with the Conservatives.

The Conservatives have the right argument on the economy – Labour’s jobs tax will kill the recovery, so we’ve got to cut Labour’s waste to stop it.

And we’ve got the big idea for the future of our country. Labour’s big government has failed – it’s time to build the Big Society.

The Conservatives have the energy, leadership and values to get Britain moving again.


Who we are fighting for

· The Conservatives are fighting this election for the Great Ignored. Young, old, rich, poor, black, white, gay, straight. They start businesses, operate factories, teach our children, clean the streets, grow our food and keep us healthy - keep us safe. They work hard, pay their taxes, obey the law. They’re good, decent people – they’re the people of Britain and they just want a reason to believe that anything is still possible in our country. This election is about giving them that reason, giving them that hope. That’s the Conservatives’ mission for the next 30 days and we can’t wait to get started.

If Tony Blair is held in such thrall by a shadow cabinet front bencher, it seems reasonable to assume that there is no idealogical difference between them.

Quite a few years out of date, Tim, and you know that as well as I do.

Michael Gove was not a front bench spokesman when he wrote that in the Spectator. If you asked Michael Gove today whether he thinks that the things he praised about Blair still apply to Brown's government today, he would say no.

There is a similar saying by Germany's Iron Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck: Benjamin Franklin is supposed to have put the same saying in a more humorous form: "Wise men profit by the mistakes of others, while fools will not learn even from their own blunders." Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
