Power cuts in Mirehouse

Please note that the post below was published more than ten years ago on 1st August 2013

About forty homes in the Mirehouse area of Whitehaven, mostly in Meadow Road and Latrigg Road, lost power for much of the three hours period from last Thursday to Sunday due to an underground cable fault.

Whitehaven has a very strong community spirit, and what makes this story an uplifting one is that good neighbours who had not lost power rallied round to help those who had - for example, community heroine Louise MacDonald who lives over the road from some of those affected boiled flasks of water, cooked meals, and charged mobile phones for people who had lost power.

When, as sometimes happens, I find the world depressing I think of people like Louise MacDonald and others who are willing to give time and effort to help their neighbours and their community. There are many good people in the world and they are what makes life worth living.
