Watch out for ice and snow today

I had to clear a lawer of ice from the windscreen before driving off today for the second time this week.

But what was all the more alarming, when pouring away a quantity of water which had collected on a tarpaulin covering an item beside my house, was to find a sheet of ice on the surface which still had not melted by late afternoon.

If ice can be solid in those circumstances, there may still be ice on roads and pavements, particularly where it has been in shadow, do do take care if you are out and about today.

This is a true story but let it serve as a warning.
The weekend of 2nd and 3rd November the mrs and I were going down to a family reunion in stoke on trent. between J37 and J38 it started to rain hevily a lot falling as hail. the mrs was driving so when i say we were doing 70 then she turned off the cruise and dropped to 60 for once i am not telling porkies. anyway a car, a very nice 4x4 lexus passed us at about 65-70 then he lost it. span once hit the central reservation, span right across the 3 lanes of the motor way (5 spins) hit the crash barrier on the left side taking the entire front end out of the car, and ended up 50 yards or so down the hard shoulder facing the wrong way. Luckily the man was not too badly injured, if a little (well a lot) shaken, he was transfered to another doctors (lucky him) car as his own was leaking fuel and smoking, whilst i phoned for and ambulance and the police.

Like i say on this occasion then all was ok, its the fact he had a nice car (which is not so nice anymore) that saved him, but it shows just how quickly conditions can change, and to be aware of this

There but for the grace of God ...

Earlier this month (the weekend after the incident you described) something similar nearly happened to me on the M6. I believe I hit a patch of black ice while driving at about 60 mph near Lancaster.

Fortunately I regained control of the car without hitting anyone or anything, but if I had been travelling faster or been less fortunate I might not be here to write about it. Just goes to show that you cannot be too careful.
