Quotes of the day 21st January 2015

Yesterday was the 750th anniversary of the first parliament in Britain, called by Simon de Montfort, and this year also sees the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta

The BBC designated yesterday as "Democracy Day" so here are some quotes about democracy:

“People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.”

( Alan Moore, V for Vendetta )

“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”
( Winston S. Churchill. But he also said,)

“Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

(WSC, Speech in the House of Commons, 11 November 1947)”

“Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.”
( James Bovard )

Alan Moore hits the nail squarely on the head. That's why we so sorely need democracy, in turn that's why we need Harrogate.

You know, I was just looking through this blog at some of the things that you have blogged this week.

these are (mostly) items of at least minimal interest. Things like the NHS, Democracy, the horrible insidents in the football fans and pigeon keepers post, The economy, Hospital rebuilds and things.

and what has been the main discussion on the radio and even on the TV news?

that's right, "there has not been a woman with her wobblies out on page 3 of the sun since Friday"

You wonder why churchill said - "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."
perhaps, if they were more aware then maybe things would be different.

Yes, it is extraordinary what the media find it worth discussing. You would not think there was a shortage of important things to discuss.
