Margaret Thatcher's privately funded memorial foundation

Margaret Thatcher's death has not stopped the left spreading silly myths about her - if anything they seem to have got worse

I don't follow any of the people who have been retweeting the latest pointless slur against Mrs T, a daft campaign against something which was never proposed in the first place which has been promoted by a badly misinformed bunch of sad anoraks called "38 degrees" but learned about it from Conservative Home.

Following Baroness Thatcher's death last year, it was proposed to set up a memorial foundation and library in her memory. Fundraising started and was backed by David Cameron in this article in the Daily Telegraph. The article states that the trustees are looking to raise £15 million for the project. It does not suggest that one penny of that money is to be extorted from taxpayers.

Unfortunately, as Mark Wallace all too accurately pointed out on Conservative Home, a large chunk of the left simply do not get the distinction between a politician supporting something and suggesting that taxpayers' money be given to it.

Indeed, one of the early objectors to the non-existent proposal to spend public money on the Margaret Thatcher memorial made a point, apparently with ironic intent, which was in fact absolutely true when he wrote

"Just seen the proposed plans for £15m taxpayer funded Thatcher memorial. No, no, no! Surely she'd have wanted it privately funded?"

Well, yes actually, she would have, which is precisely why it was always going to be.

Unfortunately this has not stopped the intellectually challenged class warriors from "38 degrees" setting up a petition to oppose public funding for the centre, which as of this evening 72,780 misinformed people have signed.

I have joined Mark Wallace as flagging the petition as inappropriate, in my case on the following grounds:

"The premise for the petition is false as it is campaigning against something which has never been proposed: to quote one of the trustees of the proposed centre, Conor Burns MP, "the Margaret Thatcher Centre will be entirely privately funded. No taxpayers money at all."

Hence this petition is campaigning against taxpayer funding for a project which is not asking for any,  constitutes a total waste of the time of everyone concerned and should be deleted."
