Derwentwater Road and Meadow Road in Mirehouse, Whitehaven

As I posted on New Year's Eve after a visit to look at some of the roads in the Mirehouse part of my county division, the condition of certain roads on the estate is unacceptable and downright dangerous with Meadow Road and Derwentwater Road two of those which cause most concern.

As I promised at the time I raised this with County Highways officers on Tuesday when they were back at their desks after the new year break.

I had an initial response from them today. Highways department officers have been to look at the roads, and agree with the concerns raised about Meadow Road and Derwentwater Road.

The officers say there will be money in next year's budget to, quote, "make a start on addressing the issue" although they have also said that "it must be recognised the challenges we face given the current construction" of the road areas concerned.

That is obviously not enough in the short term as something needs to be done very quickly even if it is not a full solution.

The officers have made arrangements for the road to be swept and hot material applied to the potholes, and then they intend to seal once the hot material is in place to at least try to prevent the holes from "plucking out again."

Will continue to keep an eye on the situation, I think this is going to be an ongoing but at least it looks like the problem has been recognised and there will be some action on it.
